Mohs Skin Cancer Surgery

Mohs surgery is the gold-standard treatment for skin cancers, as it has the highest cure rate compared to any other treatment. This type of surgery examines 100% of the circumference of the removed skin and is able to detect microscopic skin cancer cells. The goal is to remove the least amount of skin possible and simultaneously give the highest chance of cure.

We start by excising the tumor along with a small margin of surrounding tissue (1). The removed tissue is then meticulously sliced into thin sections and examined under a microscope by the surgeon to check for any remaining cancer cells at the edges (2). If cancer cells are detected, additional tissue is removed and analyzed. This precise process is repeated until no cancer cells are visible under the microscope, ensuring that the entire tumor has been successfully removed (3). Your surgeon will carefully close the incision with a variety of techniques that minimizes the final scar as much as possible and speed up healing times.
