Skin Cancer
Types of skin cancer
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States and generally falls into two categories: melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer. The most common nonmelanoma skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Melanoma is less common but considered the most serious form of skin cancer due to its ability to spread if left untreated. When detected early, most skin cancers are highly treatable, making regular skin checks and early evaluation important.
Annual skin cancer screenings are an important part of maintaining healthy skin and identifying concerning lesions as early as possible. At American Skin Institute, our dermatology team recommends scheduling a comprehensive annual skin exam to evaluate for signs of skin cancer and other abnormal skin changes. Monthly skin self-checks are also encouraged, as early detection allows many skin cancers to be treated more effectively. If you notice a new, changing, or concerning spot on your skin, do not delay seeking evaluation. With convenient office locations in Sherman Oaks and Westlake Village, American Skin Institute provides expert skin cancer screenings, diagnosis, and treatment in a patient-centered environment.
